Have you ever wanted to screenshot something on Instagram but stopped yourself thinking — will they find out?
Good news. In most cases, Instagram does NOT notify anyone when you take a screenshot.
But there are a couple of exceptions you need to know about. Let’s break it all down simply.
The Quick Answer
Here’s a simple table so you know exactly where you stand:
| What You’re Screenshotting | Will They Get Notified? |
|---|---|
| A Post on the Feed | ❌ No |
| A Story | ❌ No |
| A Reel | ❌ No |
| Highlights | ❌ No |
| Someone’s Profile | ❌ No |
| A Normal DM | ❌ No |
| Close Friends Story | ❌ No |
| A Collab Post | ❌ No |
| Instagram Notes | ❌ No |
| Broadcast Channel | ❌ No |
| Instagram Live | ❌ No |
| Disappearing Photo (View Once) | ✅ YES — They Get Notified |
| Vanish Mode Messages | ✅ YES — They Get Notified |
So the only time Instagram tells someone you took a screenshot is when you screenshot disappearing messages — photos or videos that are set to vanish after being seen.
Stories — Can They See If You Screenshot?
No. If you screenshot someone’s Story — regular or Close Friends — they will NOT know. They can see who viewed their Story, but not who screenshotted it.
This also applies to screen recordings. Record the whole Story if you want — no notification is sent.
Posts, Reels & Highlights — Safe to Screenshot?
Yes, completely safe. Screenshot a post, a Reel, a Highlight, or someone’s profile all you want. The other person gets zero notification. Instagram treats all of this as public content, so no alerts are sent.
DMs — This Is Where It Gets Important
For normal DM conversations — text messages, regular photos, memes, links — you can screenshot freely. No notification is sent.
But for two special types of messages, Instagram DOES notify:
1. View Once Photos & Videos
When someone sends you a photo or video set to “View Once,” it disappears after you look at it once. If you screenshot it, the sender gets a notification right away.
Also — Instagram now shows a black screen when you try to screenshot View Once content. So even if you try, all you get is a blank image. The sender still gets told you tried.
2. Vanish Mode
Vanish Mode is when you swipe up in a chat and the background goes dark. Messages sent here disappear after being read. If you screenshot anything in Vanish Mode, the other person sees a message in the chat saying you did it.
New Instagram Features — What Are the Rules?
Most articles skip these. Here’s the simple version:
- Instagram Live — Screenshot all you want. The host is not notified.
- Group DMs — No notification for regular group chats. But if someone sends a disappearing photo in a group, they’ll know if anyone screenshots it.
- Collab Posts — No notification. Same rules as normal posts.
- Instagram Notes — No notification.
- Broadcast Channels — No notification.
- Subscription Content — Even paid creator content sends no screenshot notification. (Surprising, but true.)
iPhone vs. Android — Any Difference?
No difference at all. The rules are exactly the same whether you’re on an iPhone or an Android phone. Instagram decides the rules — not your device.
The 2018 Story — Why People Are Still Confused
Back in 2018, Instagram actually tested screenshot notifications for Stories. When someone screenshotted your Story, a small star icon (called a starburst) appeared next to their name.
People hated it. Instagram removed it within a few months. But articles from that time are still floating around online, which is why so many people still think Instagram notifies for Story screenshots. It doesn’t — and hasn’t since 2018.
Can Anyone Find Out If You Screenshotted Their Story?
No. There is no official way for someone to see who screenshotted their Story.
You may have seen apps or websites that claim to show this information. They are all fake. Instagram does not share this data with anyone. These apps are usually scams trying to steal your login details. Stay away from them.
Instagram vs. Snapchat vs. TikTok — Who Notifies?
Just for context:
- Snapchat — notifies for almost everything (photos, videos, chats, Stories)
- Instagram — only notifies for disappearing DM content
- TikTok — never notifies for screenshots
- WhatsApp — notifies for View Once media on newer versions
Tips for Protecting Your Own Content
Since Instagram doesn’t protect most content with notifications, here’s what creators can actually do:
- Set your account to Private — only approved followers can see your posts and Stories
- Use Close Friends — share sensitive Stories with a small trusted group
- Hide Stories from specific people — go to Settings → Privacy → Story → Hide Story From
- Use Vanish Mode for private chats — at least you’ll know if someone tries to screenshot
- Add a watermark to your photos/videos — your name travels with the content even if it gets shared
Save Instead of Screenshot — A Better Habit
Instead of screenshotting posts, use Instagram’s save/bookmark button. It’s the flag icon below any post. This saves a link to the original, keeps everything in one place, and the quality is better than a screenshot. No notification is sent either way — but bookmarking is just cleaner.
Quick How-To’s
How to turn on Vanish Mode: Open a DM → Swipe up → Background goes dark → You’re in Vanish Mode
How to make your account private: Profile → Settings → Privacy → Account Privacy → Turn on Private Account
How to hide your Story from someone: Settings → Privacy → Story → Hide Story From → Pick the person

The Bottom Line

Just because Instagram doesn’t tell them doesn’t mean it’s always the right thing to do. Be thoughtful about other people’s content, especially when it’s personal or creative work they’ve put effort into.
