Floral waters, a gift of nature: uses and properties

Floral waters

The aromatic waters are rich in beneficial properties. Excellent natural remedies for the health and beauty of skin and hair

Every woman has that hint of vanity that leads her to take care of her face and hair. It is not always easy to find the right product that meets your needs. In addition to creams, serums, etc., hydrolytes must be added to the list of their beauty allies. Also known as aromatic waters or floral waters, these precious elixirs are nothing more than the result of the natural distillation of certain types of plants, aromatic and otherwise.

Floral water

The floral waters , as their name suggests, are derived from flowers. Not to be confused with vegetable oils . Floral waters come from the distillation of flowers by steaming water and then decanting.

The steam distillation takes place in a still and makes it possible to obtain two liquids:

essential oil

floral water (or hydrosol): the water used for distillation and which contains aromatic molecules captured during this process.

Floral water is therefore what remains in the still after the distillation of a flower's essential oil. The water obtained therefore has trace elements, active ingredients and aromatic molecules originally contained in the flower. There are therefore as many floral waters as there are essential oils and therefore just as many different benefits. It can be softening, regenerating, soothing, etc.

Essential oil, hydrosol or floral water, what's the difference?

Essential oil, hydrosol, floral water, it's hard to navigate and tell the difference! Here is a little reminder for each of them:

essential oil is the oil obtained from the distillation of a plant or a flower

floral water is water from the distillation of a flower

hydrosol is water from the distillation of a plant

The molecules that are therefore found in hydrosols are only the most hydrophilic and we do not find the same composition in the essential oil and in its hydrosol or floral water. The latter is therefore much softer than oil and has the advantage of being without contraindication and therefore usable by the whole family. As a reminder, essential oils are among other things not recommended for pregnant women, children under 6 years old or people undergoing medical treatment, which is not the case for floral waters.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE FLOWER WATERS

The flower waters are made starting from the whole flower and the procedure is very simple. Obviously, given the nature of these waters, the advice is to consume them or use them in the kitchen as soon as they are ready, without waiting, in order to preserve their organoleptic qualities as much as possible

First step

The flowers can be fresh or dried: in the first case, a quick cleaning in water is required, after which they can be used; the dry ones, on the other hand, are ready to use, just as they are. If you use fresh flowers, you will need a larger quantity, because they are less "concentrated" than dried ones, which contain less water.

Second step

If you can, you prefer wild flowers, but if you can't find them, opt for cultivated ones; the ideal solution is to grow them yourself. If this is not possible, you can choose edible varieties, that is, designed for food consumption and therefore without the use of synthetic chemicals. But let's see together how to prepare the flower water step by step.
