Basic science is the domain of studies that comprise the pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects. The program can effectively prepare you for United States Medical Licencing Examination(USMLE) step one exam before progressing to the next level of clinical medicine. The basic sciences MD program is spread over five semesters to acquaint the students with the knowledge of the fundamental aspects of the medical profession.
The Caribbean island has shown
remarkable development in regards to the medical education system. These
medical schools efficiently train and teach the students in small groups to
ensure optimum absorption of knowledge by every student.
During the first semester, the course
curriculum deals with making the students familiar with the human body
structure and its function, human histology and physiology, and clinical
skills. The blend of theoretical and practical knowledge helps the students
gain proficiency using a computer-based tutorial program. The students are
trained on their communication skills and performing a physical examination.
The second semester of basic science
deals with metabolism and nutrition, Genetics and development, response,
infection, defense, clinical skills, medical ethics, and research on
evidence-based medicines. Students are trained on legal and ethical issues
involved in the practice of medicine. The students now perform the complete
medical examination and continue to develop skills related to documentation and
oral presentation of the medical tests.
Every semester is an amalgamation of
theoretical and lab-based study curriculum, in the third-semester neuroscience
and neurology, systems and disease, clinical skills, and behavioral medicine. During this basic science MD program,
the training imparted is to the learners to deal with patients with mental
illness, providing advisory to the caregivers. The students can continue
developing their skills of performing a medical examination.
In the fourth semester, the students
can gain an in-depth knowledge of the system and disease, covering the
reproductive and gastronomical systems and pediatrics. This semester also
covers critical topics like Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and renal systems. The
expanded knowledge can help the students conduct in-depth physical examinations
to understand the problem-focused history of the disease by providing a
detailed report.
The last semester's course work deals
with the multi-disease system and continued development in the physical
examination performed with more accuracy and detail. The students become
familiar with documentation skills with each focused patient visit, and diagnostic
decision-making and prescription-making skills improve with the regular
practice.
The training during basic science
curriculum takes place in the fully equipped training centers and clinics to
help the students acquire skills in using the latest technology machinery used
for medical examinations. However, the primary focus in the first five
semesters is to provide training in successfully conducting medical
investigations and effectively communicating with the team and the patients.
The students also learn to understand the patients' medical history to carry
out various medical tests to diagnose the illness.
The MD program is a well-structured
course curriculum spread over ten semesters. The first five semesters deal with
basic science, and the remaining five deal with clinical science. The blend of
theoretical and practical training can set you on the right path in your
journey of becoming a doctor. Apply now to start your medical career!
